Prompts Are Not Keywords, and Keyword Tools Cannot See Them
Your keyword tool cannot show you what people ask ChatGPT. That gap is the entire reason prompt research exists.
Semrush analyzed over 80 million lines of clickstream data and found ChatGPT prompts averaged 23 words when users were not in search mode, against 4.2 words when they were. Four words is a keyword. Twenty-three words is a conversation, with context and constraints already baked in.
So the phrasing you have spent years optimizing for is not the phrasing your buyers now use. They ask in full sentences. They add conditions. They follow up.
That is a different research problem, and it needs a different tool. Prompt Explorer is ours.
What Is Prompt Research?
Prompt research is the practice of finding which prompts people actually ask AI engines, checking whether your content appears in the answers, and seeing which competitors get cited beside you.
It runs in four moves: discover the prompts, cluster them by intent, map them against what you already cover, then optimize the gaps. Discovery is the move most teams skip, and it quietly decides everything downstream.
Think of it as the demand side of AI visibility. Prompt tracking tells you how you perform on prompts you already picked. Prompt Explorer is how you pick them.
One clarification, because the phrase gets used two completely different ways. When I looked at what currently ranks for this term, roughly half the results were about prompt engineering or academic research assignments. Prompt engineering is the craft of writing better instructions to get better output from a model. This page is about which questions your customers put to those models, and whether your brand is in the answer they get back.
Prompt Explorer Scores Every Prompt in Your Market
Type a domain or a topic and you get the prompt list with the two columns that decide what you publish next: whether you already cover it, and how much demand sits behind it.
Prompt Explorer
0 prompts discovered for this topic
Here is what you are reading, left to right. The prompt is the real phrasing people use, and content gap flags the ones you do not cover yet. Those flagged rows are your shortlist.
PQV is prompt query volume, the demand signal. The sparkline beside it shows whether that demand is climbing or fading.
Sort by PQV, filter to the gaps, and the top row is your next brief. No spreadsheet, no guessing which questions matter.
How Prompt Research Differs from Keyword Research
Keyword research targets a query. Prompt research targets a conversation.
The mechanics diverge in four ways:
- One query versus a chain. A search is a lookup. A prompt session unfolds as a sequence, and each follow-up narrows the intent further.
- A ranked list versus one answer. Ten blue links give you ten chances to be seen. An AI answer cites a handful of sources, and everybody else is invisible.
- Stable positions versus volatile ones. Rankings move slowly and predictably. AI answers are personalized and regenerate, so you track patterns rather than positions.
- Search volume versus prompt volume. Prompt query volume, or PQV, measures how often a prompt gets asked across AI engines. It is the number that tells you whether a prompt earns the work.
Keyword research is not dead. It still tells you how your market phrases things, and that phrasing feeds prompt discovery. It just stopped being enough on its own.
How to Run Prompt Research in OmniSEO
Run your own domain first, then a competitor's, then the topic. That order takes you from "where am I now" to "what am I missing" in about ten minutes, and all four steps happen in the same screen. For the wider process, including the free Google and Microsoft reports, see our full prompt research walkthrough.
1. Discover
Enter a domain or a topic. Your own domain shows the prompts where you already surface, often across more topics than you expected. A competitor's domain is usually the more useful run, because it exposes the ground they cover and you do not.
Searching a topic instead, something like "tile flooring DIY", shows you how real people phrase questions in that space rather than how your marketing team phrases them.
No setup, no analytics connection, no tracking code.
2. Cluster
Group what comes back by intent. Informational prompts build awareness and rarely convert. Commercial and transactional prompts are where AI engines weigh options and name specific brands, which is where the revenue actually sits.
3. Map
Read the content gap indicator on each row. It tells you whether you currently cover that prompt or not. Sort by PQV and your shortlist writes itself: high demand, no coverage, straight to the top.
4. Optimize
Open a prompt to see the answer an engine returns and the sources it cites, then click into those cited pages. You are looking at the exact content structure that earned a citation for that prompt. It is the most specific content brief you will ever get, and a competitor wrote it for you.
Check the ChatGPT Answer and the AI Overview Without Leaving the Prompt
Open any prompt in Prompt Explorer and you get both engine views in one place. You need them, because the same customer need arrives as two different strings depending on where someone asks. I call this the phrasing split. Stick with me, because it changes what you write.
Say a customer wants to pull up old tile. In ChatGPT that might arrive as a full sentence about not wrecking the subfloor underneath. In Google's AI Overview, the same need tends to show up closer to "how to remove tile flooring", because it came from a search engine and still carries search habits.
Optimize for one phrasing and you can miss the other completely.
Every prompt opens with both views, so you can read the ChatGPT answer and the Google AI Overview version before committing a single page. When the phrasing diverges that far, you need one piece of content built to satisfy both, or you need two.
Why Being in the Answer Beats Ranking Beneath It
Ranking below an AI answer is worth roughly half what it used to be. Pew Research tracked 68,879 Google searches from 900 US adults and found people clicked a result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not.
They rarely clicked the sources inside the summary either, and they were likelier to abandon the session entirely.
So the target moved. Being cited inside the answer is the visible position now, and getting cited consistently starts with knowing which prompts produce those answers in the first place.
Can I Use Google Search Console for Prompt Research?
Not for the research part. Search Console can tell you where you already appear on Google, and nothing at all about the prompts you are missing.
Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports on June 3, 2026. They cover AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover, reporting impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates. Clicks are not among those metrics, Google says it is still adding metrics over time, and the reports are rolling out to a subset of sites, so you may not have them yet.
Two limits matter for this work. It is Google only, so there is no ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude data in it. And it is a record of where you surfaced, which by definition cannot include a prompt you have never covered.
Search Console measures. Prompt research discovers. You want both, and only one of them is optional.
How OmniSEO Compares to Other Prompt Research Tools
The honest difference is access, not features.
Profound built its Prompt Research Reports on a stated 1.5 billion real user prompts, which is a genuinely large dataset, and by its own announcement those reports go to Enterprise customers. Semrush ships a Prompt Research feature as well, inside a paid subscription.
OmniSEO's Prompt Explorer runs in the 7-day free trial with no setup and no connections, so you can research your own domain and two competitors before you commit to anything.
Here is where we draw our own line, since you should know it up front: the trial gives you a snapshot of today. Tracking those prompts over time across ten engines is a paid feature. If you are actively comparing vendors, our Profound alternatives breakdown goes deeper than this page can.
Your First Prompt Explorer Session, In About Ten Minutes
Start the free trial, then run your own domain. Run your closest competitor. Sort both by PQV and find the highest-volume prompt where they appear and you do not.
That single row is your next piece of content, and you did not have to guess at it. Add Perplexity and ChatGPT coverage once the first piece lands. If you want to test the idea before signing up, check one prompt free with our AI Prompt Volume Checker.
So how many prompts is your market asking right now that nobody at your company has ever seen?
