Part of that strategy is monitoring, which is where AI visibility metrics come in. These metrics show how you're performing in AI engines, so you know what to optimize.

What are AI visibility metrics?

AI visibility metrics track how a brand, company, or product appears in AI-generated responses on engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. They help you understand how often people see your brand when they search with AI engines.

Across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, these metrics give you a consistent way to measure presence in a channel where traditional rankings don't apply.

What AI visibility metrics should I track?

Once you understand what AI visibility is, the next question is what to measure. AI is still changing quickly, but a handful of core metrics have emerged as the most useful signals.

Here are the main ones.

Prompt visibility

Prompt visibility looks at specific prompts to see how visible you are for those queries. You track individual prompts to find out whether your brand shows up in those responses, either as a brand mention or a citation.

Citations

Citations are one of the most important AI visibility metrics because they show how often AI engines link directly to your content. Being the cited answer matters, so you want to track how often you're cited and, by extension, how often you're visible.

It helps to separate two related ideas here:

  • Brand mentions measure how often AI engines reference your brand by name in a response, even without a link. This is your baseline volume signal. It tells you whether you're part of the conversation at all.
  • Citation rate measures how often those responses actually link to or cite your content as a source. This is a stronger trust and authority signal, because it shows the engine treats your content as something worth pointing readers to.

Tracking both gives you the full picture. Mentions tell you that you're showing up, and citation rate tells you whether AI engines see you as the source behind the answer.

Brand sentiment

Brand sentiment shows how AI engines view and describe your brand across different queries. It tells you which attributes get attached to your brand, which can shape how people decide to interact with your company.

Share of voice

Share of voice, sometimes called share of search, measures the portion of total search volume that your brand captures. In AI search, it's how much search real estate you capture compared to your competition. It shows your visibility against competitors.

You'll see both terms used in the industry, but they describe the same idea: your slice of AI mentions and citations relative to the other brands competing for the same prompts.

AI visibility score (0 to 100)

An AI visibility score rolls the metrics above into a single benchmark, usually on a 0 to 100 scale. Instead of reviewing prompt visibility, citations, sentiment, and share of voice separately, the score blends them into one number you can track over time and compare against competitors.

That makes it a useful executive-level signal. At a glance, it tells you whether your overall presence in AI answers is improving or slipping, and where you stand against the other brands in your space. It's the headline metric that the more granular metrics feed into.

Because the score is a benchmark rather than a single action item, it works best alongside the underlying metrics. The score tells you whether you're winning, and prompt visibility, citations, and sentiment tell you why. For a breakdown of how an AI visibility score is calculated and how to improve it, see our guide on the AI visibility score.

Why do I need to track AI visibility metrics?

So why track AI visibility metrics? A few reasons to keep tabs on your AI performance:

  • AI search is growing: More people are using AI search engines, so you can't ignore it anymore. Tracking your performance in these engines lets you meet people where they are.
  • Traditional metrics can't capture AI visibility: Standard SEO metrics don't capture your AI search performance. AI visibility metrics give you that insight.
  • You can't improve what you can't see: You can't improve your AI search performance if you don't know where you stand. Tracking AI visibility metrics shows you where you stand.

Why you need to track AI visibility metrics consistently

Checking your AI visibility once and assuming the picture holds isn't enough. AI answers shift far more than traditional search results. Ask the same question twice and you can get different brands, sources, and framing each time.

In practice, only around 30% of brands stay visible from one AI answer to the next. Roughly two out of three brands that appear in a response can drop out the next time a similar prompt runs. A single snapshot can badly misrepresent how often you're actually showing up.

Consistent tracking turns noisy, one-off readings into a reliable trend. When you measure the same prompts regularly, you can tell the difference between normal answer-to-answer fluctuation and a real shift in your visibility. You'll also catch drops early enough to respond, instead of finding them after they've cost you weeks of presence.
